2 MM TWO-LAYER ESD RUBBER MAT

2 mm ESD Rubber Mat for Electronics Workbenches

The ESDBEST 2 mm ESD rubber mat is a two-layer work-surface solution for electronics assembly, PCB handling, inspection, testing and repair workstations.

The static-dissipative working surface is combined with a lower-resistance conductive rubber backing to support a controlled electrical path when the mat is installed and grounded as part of an appropriate ESD control system.

Available supply formats include standard ESD mat sheets, full rolls and custom-cut 2 mm ESD mats for workstation, production and OEM requirements.

TWO-LAYER CONSTRUCTION

Two-Layer Rubber Construction for ESD Work Surfaces

A two-layer ESD rubber mat uses different materials or electrical characteristics on the working surface and backing layer.

The top static-dissipative layer provides the surface where electronic components, PCB assemblies and tools are handled. The lower conductive rubber layer provides a lower-resistance path as part of the mat construction and grounding arrangement.

Because the two layers perform different electrical functions, their resistance specifications should not be represented as one universal range.

01
TOP WORKING LAYER

Static-Dissipative Working Surface

The top layer is intended as the electronics work surface and uses a resistance specification of 106–109 Ω.

Resistance Specification 106–109 Ω
02
CONDUCTIVE BACKING

Conductive Rubber Backing

The bottom conductive layer provides a lower-resistance path and uses a resistance specification of 104–106 Ω.

Resistance Specification 104–106 Ω
!
DIFFERENT LAYERS, DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS

The static-dissipative working surface and conductive backing should be evaluated according to their respective specifications rather than being treated as a single resistance range.

REAL TESTING EVIDENCE

Real Resistance Testing with ACL Model 800

Resistance testing provides useful technical evidence when the instrument, test method, voltage, environmental conditions, electrode arrangement and tested surface are clearly documented.

ESDBEST uses an ACL Model 800 resistance meter to record resistance measurements on actual ESD mat samples. The tested surface must always be identified because the static-dissipative working layer and conductive backing are designed for different electrical functions.

INSTRUMENT

ACL Model 800

Resistance measurements are recorded using an ACL Model 800 resistance meter.

METHODS

PTP and RTG

Point-to-Point (PTP) and Resistance-to-Ground (RTG) measurements are recorded as applicable to the test requirement.

TEST CONDITIONS

Recorded with Each Test

Relevant conditions such as voltage, temperature, humidity and electrode arrangement can be documented with the measurement.

TESTED SURFACE

Top or Bottom Layer Identified

The top working layer or bottom conductive layer must be clearly identified because each layer has a different electrical function.

AVAILABLE EVIDENCE

Resistance Records and Test Documentation

Available evidence may include resistance readings, test photographs and recorded environmental conditions associated with the tested sample.

!
IMPORTANT TESTING NOTE

Individual test readings represent the tested sample and recorded conditions and should not be treated as universal values for every 2 mm ESD rubber mat.

GROUNDING

Grounding a 2 mm ESD Workbench Mat

An ESD rubber mat does not provide complete protection by itself. It must be connected through appropriate grounding hardware to a verified grounding reference defined by the facility’s ESD control program.

A typical workstation may include the ESD work surface, grounding snap, mat grounding cord, common-point ground and personnel grounding equipment.

01 ESD Work Surface

2 mm ESD rubber mat used as the controlled electronics work surface.

02 Grounding Snap & Cord

Provides the connection between the mat and the workstation grounding system.

03 Verified Grounding Reference

The final connection should be verified according to the facility’s ESD control requirements.

WORKSTATION SYSTEM

Grounding should be considered together with the complete workstation, including the mat, grounding hardware, common-point ground and personnel grounding equipment where applicable.
